Two things on my mind lately. First, TV and how I love it so very much and secondly, my kid and instilling manners in her. In order of prioritization, I will discuss TV first.
Mmmmmmm tv…..
I just LOVE this time of year when all my favorite friends (tv characters) come back into my life and new friends (tv characters) move in and capture my heart. My Tivo is on overdrive, I’m workin it to pieces kicking all that Dora and Diego and Little Einstein garbage off of it and quickly replacing them with McDreamy and Nora Walker and Gabrielle Solis. Because, honestly, there is nothing better, NOTHING BETTER than putting the kid to bed, grabbing a chocolate chip granola bar and a big glass of milk and then completely tuning out ANY and ALL stresses in your life while you shamelessly pretend that an ER Resident would perform emergency surgery on a wounded Deer in a hospital parking lot.
Grey’s Anatomy premiered last night, do you not love this show? I love it, and the Premiere, it was o….kay… The unrequited love between George and Izzy, I am not crazy about because I’m a Callie fan. And uh, you know, a MARRIAGE fan. Is it so much to ask? Don’t cheat on your wife George! She rocks and you bore me with your not acknowledging it. So, I say Boo to that but the half-sister thing was great.
Big Shots was after Grey’s. If you didn’t watch it, you didn’t miss out. Which is sad because I really want to see the West Wing dude and the Alias dude succeed in a new series. But it was a big no-go for me. Not funny at all, lots of affairs….. the only guy I liked was the sarcastic married guy who at the end of the show says “I might actually have a shot with my own Wife tonight!”
Private Practice was the other night. Can I just say that I love how Shonda Rhimes doesn’t typecast or stereotype her Black Men? They’re not angry, or over-the-top serious, or ghetto, they’re just Black dudes, normal Black dudes. It’s so incredibly refreshing. This show grows on you. Try it, you’ll like it.
What else? Oh yes, my new favorite show, Dirty Sexy Money! Favorite premiere so far, loved it. This show better stay on because I’m getting really tired of loving new shows and then never seeing them again, which happened with Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which I’m convinced was canceled because it was too smart. Gah! Dumb people ruin EVERYTHING!
So, more TV people! That’s what we all need! Brothers and Sisters premieres this Sunday night after Desperate Housewives and I may have to join a Sally Field fan club after watching it. It’s not beyond me to be obsessed to the point of joining a fan club, sometime I’ll have to tell you about my Jonathan Taylor Thomas days.
I’m curious, what is your guilty television pleasure? Besides Project Runway, of course. Because ANYONE who’s ANYONE already loves Project Runway, obviously. And does anyone out there actually watch those obscure weird shows like Bones? and House? and Without a Trace? Besides my friend Kellie?
Now on to my Kid.
Teaching her manners has been really hard and sad for me lately. For instance, the other night we went to a Football party (go BSU!) and Delaney kept asking everyone there to get up off the couch and join her in the next room to play “Hop on over a line” (this sounds like a game I would invent to keep her preoccupied but really, she came up with it all on her own). At first, some people were nice and joined her even though IAN JOHNSON WAS SCORING ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN AND HERE WE ARE IN THE NEXT ROOM HOPPING OVER A LINE! But then after awhile, it became clear that nobody really wanted to play the game anymore.
And for some reason, this made me sad. Not that people didn’t want to play her game, I understand that, and this happens after 30 minutes of hopping. But I had to pull her aside and ask her to stop asking people to get up and play her game, that the grownups were watching football for a minute.
It was hard for me to convey to her that it wasn’t that nobody wanted to play with her, it was that we have to learn manners and asking people repeatedly to do something is considered bad manners. It was a manners thing, not a “nobody wants to play with you” thing. But I don’t know that she understood and I was sad to have to break her little spirit because she was REALLY enjoying playing with the other grownups. How do you say “Stop talking to people honey, it’s rude”?
This whole parent thing is difficult and I’ve never liked manners anyway to begin with.

Here is a sad sad picture of Delaney to pull on your heartstrings. YOU would have played “Hop on over a line” with her, wouldn’t you have?

OK, I just stopped reading in mid blogpost–STUDIO 60 was CANCELLED?? I didn’t know that, and now I must go send the people who did this hate mail. They suck.

Yes, I would have played with her. In fact, I’m the sucker that ends up playing/talking with the kids the whole time, at least if they ask.
Now on to the important TV topic… i posted a letter to Shonda Rhimes on my blog if you want to check it. I haven’t gotten to watch G.A. yet, but its waiting on my dvr, and I can’t wait. The letter to Shonda was after Private Practice. What else do we like? ummm… I really liked October Road last year. Not sure when it’s coming back. Lost, of course, which is not coming until FEBRUARY. ugh. Prison Break. Used to like Without a Trace until I had kids. Now it’s too scary. The Office is amazingly funny. Surely you already watch that, though, right? Yes, Project Runway, obviously. Top Chef, too. Sometimes I watch funny shows like The Hills on MTV. It simultaneously makes me wish I had more money and equally glad I don’t. I’m sure there’s more. I think we feel the same way about tv.

Project Runway, of course. And, although I will probably deny it if asked publicly, I love me some America’s Next Top Model. Seriously, it’s tragic and compelling - kind of like a train wreck.
I would hop on over the line with that little beauty any time. But probably after a half an hour, I’d want to hop on back to couch and watch some TV. Sad, but true.

I may be labeled a freak, but besides a few episodes of Desperate Housewives a few years ago, I haven’t seen any of the shows that you mentioned. And if that doesn’t creep you out enough, the hub and I don’t watch football; we never know who is going to be in the Superbowl until after the fact. Granted, he’s European, but he doesn’t care about soccer either (which amazes his Euro-friends). Freaks, I tell ya - we’re freaks, but Happy in our freakdom. So yes, we would have gleefully joined in with the Hop Over a Line antics.

Yes we too were Studio 60 fans and just one day it was gone. We were mad too. It was good. Very good.
liked grey’s. liked private practice. DID NOT like big shots - in fact only watched the first 20 min and hated it. i must have missed dirty sexy money, but will look for it.

My guilty pleasure is The Office. Stupid beyond words sometimes, but I loves me some Jim Halpert. Missed Grey’s…will have to watch it on the PC.
I was always the adult playing with the kids, so my heartstrings are definitely pulled there!

I understand I’m the only woman in the world who doesn’t like gray’s anatomy. Oh well. I don’t, I find it boring.
I LOVE! “how I met your mother” though I’m feeling old watching it. Here are these characters my age, and they are just starting to think about getting married, and I’ve been married almost nine years.
I liked Heros last year, and this year it has left an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Not a good episode.
Yes I know I’m not twelve but I LOVED gossip girl…..
Thursday is rough for me, Earl, the Office, Scrubs, Thirty Rock on NBC and Ugly Betty on ABC. However Ugly Betty streams the next day, so I watch it while the bee sleeps.
The simpsons and family as always are brilliant!
My favorite guilty pleasures, Smallville (Clark is yummy) and The Waltons and A different world reruns. Those three shows combined show just exactly WHY I’m a total loser and nerd.

Hmmmm….is right!! My Tivo is also in overdrive right now and I love it:)
We may be the only people that still faithfully watch ER after 14 years– John Stamos helped, but I’m thinking this may be the last year it is on. LOVE Brothers and Sisters, totally makes me happy to have a family full of dysfunctional people. Office- the funniest show on TV. Grey’s, my fav, but it could lose me if it continues down some of these plot lines. Didn’t love Private Practive like I wanted to– seemed to be trying too hard. Lost, jury is out on this one. Really enjoy a few good, mindless reality shows. Amazing Race is the best, but not sure if it is coming back?? Top Chef, Project Runway……and the list goes on and on!!

You did the right thing telling your kiddo to let the big people watch TV. Not the easy thing, of course– good parenting is not easy, darnitanyway– but in the long run believe me you are doing her a huge favor teaching her she does not rule the universe.
Her spouse will thank you. Her boss will thank you. Her children will thank you. And I am darned certain the footbal fans yesterday all breathed a sigh of relief!
Good job mom!
Mary, mom to many, several of who are still learning that though they are dearly loved and cherished, they also do not rule the universe.

Funny, because when you said adults actually played with my sweetie Delaney for almost 30 minutes while a good game was on BLEW my mind. I actually laughed outloud. Mostly becuase I adore your little one and have played baseball with her using a plank of wood and whiffle ball in my swim suit but would NOT have hopped over the line more than….mmmm….maybe 3 times before running back to adult world with no guilt whatsoever! I guess that’s the joy when you don’t have children yet….being able to ignore them without feeling guilt……

I totally knew you were awesome before this post, but I have more evidence now to back this knowledge up. I too am so sad and certain that Studio 60 was cancelled because it was too smart of a show. It was a great show. It is sad that they don’t make more TV like that. I so too LOVED Dirty Sexy Money. I hope that show makes it. It was hilarious and witty and also a little smart. Big Shots was also a disappointment–but how many other shows have trani-hookers on the first episode? Oh wait Dirty Sexy Money has one of those too. Grey’s was disappointing. I hope Callie thumps George…he is a little whiner.
Looking forward to tonight and am so glad that we have two Tivo’s. I couldn’t make it with just one.
I would have totally played Hop over the line for as long as Delaney wanted. I am just that kind of girl.

Of course I would have. I am not a big sports fan anyway. I can see why you feel bad after looking at that face.

Actually, I have to admit that I made the game up with her in the kitchen… and didn’t know until reading this blog entry that I should have come up with another game, or stuck with that one. If I could do the night over again, I would hop over the lines in our little kitchen all night long…

Just found your blog through Boomama! I also love this time of year and all the new shows! woo hoo! However, my favorite shows do happen to be Bones, House and Numb3rs! They rock! I guess that’s why they make so many different ones! I little bit for everyone!
Good luck with your adoptions!
