I really don’t know what to do

I am quite vexed, my friends. Quite vexed.

Hillary, Barack, John, Rudy, Ron, they are playing with my emotions and I don’t know what to do. I want to declare my love for one of them, snuggle up next to them and stay there throughout the 2008 elections. But I am wavering. I’m perplexed. I’m scared. I don’t know.

My deal with Hillary is this. She scares the living behooters out of me. Really, she does. Not in the sense that she is unpredictable or scary politically to me, it’s that she REALLY TRULY instills a sense of fear within me. Like a bully would. Or a feral animal would.

If you can’t tell from my global warming freaky and gay rights loving sidebar, I’m sort of a Lefty. On most issues, not ALL issues, but most. Hillary’s beliefs aren’t TOO off from my own, so it’s not that I’m afraid she’ll make horribly wrong political decisions, it’s just that I’m afraid she could get in the habit of sending blood-thirsty assassins after any non-believers is all. And since most of you reading this site could be categorized as “Hillary Non-Believers”, your future safety is a concern of mine should Hillary gets the Democratic nomination. I just can’t QUITE get the sense that she plays well with others.

I remember once that my cousin Rebekah was playing high school basketball and I went to one of her games. Upon seeing that there was a female Referee, Bekah groaned and pointed out disdainfully that “great, it’s a woman Ref.” I was confused, figuring that having a woman Ref might be in her benefit. But Bekah remarked that “female Refs are the worst, they always are out to prove something, that they are just as tough as the male Refs and they therefore overcompensate and take their Ref power beyond what’s necessary to make their point.”

It feels almost un-feminist to say this, but dude, HILLARY IS THAT REF!

Now Barack Barack Barack. I’m digging Barack. Cool, calm, collected. Educated, informed, communicative. But…….. does he REALLY know what he’s doing? Compared to Hillary, Barack still has training wheels on. He’s still learning not to take the corners too fast and to watch for cars. He still needs a spotter and an applauding, cheering, supportive crowd. In terms of KNOWING the system, having EXPERIENCED the fast lane, being FULLY familiar with their own stance on issues, Hillary is about 48 Nascar loops ahead of Barack. And I don’t necessarily feel like giving anybody anymore SLACK. Let’s just get on with it, no more learning curve PLEASE.

John Edwards. He’s nice, isn’t he? He sure is nice. Boy, he seems nice. He would apologize, you KNOW he would. If he was wrong, he’d admit it and apologize. So, Yep. He’s awfully nice.

Republicans.

I THINK if I were to vote Republican, I’d vote Ron Paul. So far, I like the guy. I haven’t seen much, but from what I’ve seen so far, I’m impressed! I think he has about as much chance of getting the nomination as a Playboy Bunny would, but what the heck, we’re talking hypothetically.

What I think I know so far about the Republican candidates:

Mitt Romney. Mormon. Ran the Olympics. Really wealthy. Untouched by reality.

Rudy Guiliani. Fighter. Unafraid. September 11th, that’s really all I know about him was how he handled the aftermath of Sept 11th.

Ron Paul. Interested in foreign relations. Would end war. Hated by McCain and Guiliani.

John McCain. Stubborn. Made a mistake while visiting Iraq recently.

The others aren’t on my radar yet.

With nearly 89% certainty I can say, at the end of the day, I’ll vote Democratic. Especially if Gore enters the race. But the controversy over Hillary and Barack is troubling me. I don’t think Hillary can win. I think people ALREADY made up their minds about her 10 years ago and she is incapable of changing them. But, she might get the nomination and then, well, I don’t know. I predict the Republicans would win because if Hillary scares ME and I’m ALREADY a Lefty, then how is she coming off to fence sitters and middle-grounders?

I know, I talked about politics on my blog. The last instance I heard of where a mommy blogger brought up politics was over at Rocks in my Dryer and after about 100 comments, she had to turn them off because people were screaming things like “Oprah and Barack Obama are the Anti-Christ and the Whores of Babylon!” NO JOKE. So….. this was risky I know, but really, if one of you thinks that Oprah is the Anti-Christ, then this site probably isn’t your cup of tea anyhow. Because speaking of Oprah that way at FOBS is considered Blasphemy. And if you think Hillary is scary mean, just wait until you are met with the FOBS wrath of Oprah-defendedness.

  1. I will speak no ill of Oprah. This is my promise to you.

And you know that I’m mostly a righty - one who is just as perplexed as you are. I think part of the problem is that the last, say, 15 years have left all of us a little disillusioned and cynical about whether or not one man - or one woman - can actually make a difference, if he or she will really do what they promise. And if he or she DOES try to follow through on promises, have things gotten so partisan that the opposing party will try to derail whatever the new President’s agenda might be?

It makes me a little sad, honestly.

And I like a couple of the candidates…but if I had to cast my vote tomorrow, I have no idea what I’d do.

  2. Hillary, if for no other reason than I think she could make those big bad male leaders of big important countries cry like little girls and pee their pants.

  3. Girl. If YOU’RE scared of Hillary, I don’t think she stands a chance of getting voted in.

Which is such a relief to me, you just don’t KNOW.

Because the thought of her in the presidency makes me want to flee to Switzerland. Or something. LOL.

I have NO idea who I want to vote for. I just know it’s NOT Hillary.

  4. John Edwards has fantastic hair. I mean, truly fantastic. Plus, he just seems like such a nice guy…like he could get along with anybody in the room..or world.
Hilary unsettles me for some reason, although when she spoke at my high school graduation in 95′ and she seemed nice enough, but she seems like she has a helluva mean streak, which could be good.
    I love Barack.
    What’s a girl to do?

  5. It should come as no surprise that for now, this Momma loves Obama. I’d be a Gore fan if he ran, though the Entertainment Weekly cover of him when Inconvenient Truth scared me far more than Hillary ever has (shiver).
“whores of Babylon?” Really?! We mommas are the ones who should be talking politics.

  6. I know what you mean, but, shamefully, I’m pretty lazy; politically speaking. I wait until more people are weeded out before I commit. The thing is that I’m so turned off to Republicans right now, that it’ll take one truly amazing candidate to get me to vote that way at this point. It’s almost a given that I’ll vote Democrat…

  7. I’m all for Democrats and women, but I agree something about Hillary just doesn’t sit right. Being a New Yorker, I loved Juliani after 9/11, but he seems a little warped now. *Sigh*, I’m vexed too.

  8. As a card-carrying democrat may I just say, “Go Oprah!” Although if she doesn’t run I’ll have to choose between John Edwards and his $400 haircuts (all over the papers a few months ago), or Barack, whom I really don’t think overspends on his haircuts, seeing as he refuses to fly private jets and took him family to Africa commercially. Gotta love a guy like that!

  9. Hillary scares me too, and though I lean righty, I really have no idea who to vote for either. Maybe I’ll vote for Oprah.

  10. LOL about oprah-defendedness…

I totally agree about Hillary, I don’t think she could win. I am in the same predicament you are…for now I’ll say Obama.

  11. I love Oprah a little less since she didn’t give me a minivan. :( I bet John Edwards would - he’s nice - maybe I’ll write him! To tell the truth, I haven’t felt so HOPEFUL about the political scene EVER - Barack is my man!

  12. Yeah, right there with you on not knowing what to do yet. Seem to be leaning Obama’s way. I don’t really mind the training wheels.

McCain — sold his soul to the devil — i.e. bush/cheney.
Guiliani — So being the mayor during 9/11 gives him cred to be prez?? don’t think so.
Hillary — haven’t figured her out yet. Can we just have Bill?
Edwards — seems like a nice guy but more of a veep than a prez. He’s not really what I’m looking for — regardless of his pretty hair.
Mitt — think he’s been tagged the flip-flopper for 08.
Gore — Run, Forest, Run!! (yeah, I’d vote for Al.)

(btw, I had a friend tell me that Barack was the anti-christ. Wasn’t sure what was more shocking — that she actually believes there is an anti-christ, or that she believes it is Barack Obama!)

  13. I don’t think Hillary has a chance plus I have to admit she is a little iffy…okay maybe she scares me…I hate to say another woman scares me. I looooovvvveeee Obama! Go Obama! BTW…this is my first time to your blog…love it!

  14. Oh politics, politics. i try to keep it off my blog but its so hard. I spent a few hours online last night updating myself with all the democratic contestants. The republicans have allowed so much corruption to take place during bushies presidency, so many humongous lies- I must vote liberal. So I watched the you tube debates which were very interesting. I have always been a fan of Kucinich- voted against the war and is a straight talker. Unfotunately no one knows him because he does not take corporate money and he is not good looking, so he cant get much press. I do not like Clinton since she voted for the war, wont admit it was wrong, and has lots of corporate sponsorship in her pocket. I have always been thrilled by Obama, but his recent shpeel about war in Afganistan was a turn off. Richardson, Biden, Gravel and Mr. CT himself do not interest me. So who won that debate in my opinion? I was surprised to find myself drawn to Edwards. He has admitted his failure in his vote for the War. In the debates he explained that although Gay marriage is a personal confliction for him, his religious beliefs would not affect his decidion to uphold equal oppertunity, treatment and legal protection for every person, regarless of sexual orientation. And the big, huge one- he truly believs in healthcare for all-full, free (like public school) healthcare for everybody. BTW- you must see SICKO, I cried, than tried to find out how to move to France. And as for Edwards hair? So what. I dont understand why people pay $3000.00 for a couch either, or why we would care who’s under the presidents desk at night- so the crazy expensive hair cut tabs got charged to the wrong account. It doesnt make me like Oprah any less because she lives in million dollar multiple homes, she has still done wonderful things in her charity. You get what Im saying. Watch http://johnedwards.com/watch/hair/
I must admit, if I didnt have to work or be a parent, I would be a political liberal junky :)

  15. I would love to say something smart and thought provoking about the upcoming election, but I can’t I am just as lost as you are. I am on the left side on most issues. I like to think I look at the person, values, and stances on issues and then cast my vote…..but you never know what they really will do when they make it to the oval office. There is something about Hillary that is a bit scary I can tell you my husband bought a shirt that says “FOR THE GOOD OF MAN DEFEAT HILLARY” O Yes he did. He has not worn it in public yet but I know it is coming….This the man that also bought a shirt for my 5 yr old son that says “Playground Pimp” There is somthing about Obama that doesn’t sit well with me I just can’t but my finger on it. John’s so sweet the perfect boy next door. I guess I have time to figure these folks out and who will get my vote.

  17. I SO understand your fear of political posting. I tend to avoid it as well. But sometimes you just have questions that could possibly be answered or at least clarified by the input of others. I just recently wrote a political post as well, not so much on specific candidates, but more on curiosity about a third party. I did, of course, preface it all with a “please play nice in my sandbox” request. ;)

But good for you (and me) for posting despite your wariness of mean-spirited attacks. If political loudmouth bullies stop us quieter folks from discussing our ideas, than the only ideas we’ll ever hear are theirs.

  18. Justin and I say:

    Bloomberg and Schwarzenegger……

    TWINS 2008 version :)

  19. There are times where being a legal resident alien and not a US citizen is a good thing…Election time is one of those times…

Good luck to all of you voters out there - the rest of the world is counting on you! :-)

  20. I am just starting to educate myself on the candidates seeing as I’ve been a little distracted the past five months (and do not get any tv stations). But I was pretty impressed with Ron Paul’s views while researching today. Of course he’ll probably be my fav and not get the nomination. Great post; well written.

  21. really no comments here — except I enjoyed everyones perspective on this!

  22. OK, in all seriousness, I like Obama “the mostest,” as Nate would say. I wonder if he’d allow that as a campaign slogan. “We like Obama the mostest.” OK, probably not. I guess there’s not much call for the kindergarten vote.

I just like the idea of a bunch of high-powered men wetting themselves because they’re all scared of Hillary. But that’s just me.

    Easily amused. ;)

  23. The election is so far away and there are still so many mistakes, mis-steps and madness to come. All I can say is, as a New Yorker, a democrat and a woman I would have never, ever, ever conceived of a country that would have re-elected W. a second time.
Out of any tragedy one hopes there is something positive to be gained. Is it possible that the country has finally had enough of this ignorant, arrogant, megelomaniac?
Will they finally remember that the country was at its strongest, most prosperous, and most successful for the eight years up until W parked his horse at the White House.
Too early to pick a democrat, but not too early to know that we need one.

  24. Ugh. I have this sick love/hate relationship with politics.

I have one issue that makes me vote for somebody right now and that is national security. Secure our boarders, fix immigration so people CAN come here and work legally, and most importantly stop fighting a “politically correct war” either let those boys fight to win or pull them out today. This don’t fire until fired on shit is killing more people than it is saving.

On the Republican side I’m probably going to vote for Rudy. He is strong on defense. He says he is going to put strict constructionalists[sp] on the supreme court. I don’t like him on social or economic issues for the most part, but those things aren’t important to me.

Mike Huckaby is my fave, but I can’t waste a vote.

Mit is a mormon, rich, out of touch, and just way to slick. I just don’t like him.

Fred Thompson isn’t even running, and all we know about him is his awesome you tube video slamming michael moore and that he was on some tv show.

My biggest issues with McCain are that he has put forth some of the stupidist legislation ever in the senate. Campaign finance reform was dumb and made things MUCH MUCH worse. Of course our dippy president should have vetoed it and not sent it to the courts which are way backed up. Also and this might just be me overthinking, but he was a POW in veit nam for seven years. He admits to being tortured. I don’t think this gives you a good mental health base. I would worry that in extreme crisis, which I am sure we will face in the upcoming four years, he may not be able to take it. He is also old.

The Dems, which I won’t vote for.

Hilary freaks me out. She honestly scares me, but if I were going to vote Dem, which I won’t, it would be for good ol Hilary. She is the most pro-military of the bunch and I actually think she might have a good head on her shoulders when it comes to fighting a war because I think she is an evil woman, which probably makes her excel at war making. I like the idea of a woman in the white house, but I won’t vote for a woman just because she is a woman. She has to be the RIGHT woman.

Obama is WAY to far left for the good of anybody. The entire world is turning and running away from social medicine because it has been a HUGE failure, but here is Obama, running toward it. Duh, it doesn’t work. Econ 101 will teach you that. However I find him VERY sexy and would like to watch press conferences if he were president. He is very weak on national security and I think recent comments have made him appear to know nothing about military and war and international politics. But he is hot….

Edwards lies and makes up stupid stories ALL THE TIME. He also talks to dead people and channels them in court. I don’t want my president channeling dead people. He is slick, like a nasty snake.

I like mike gravel. I like the you tube video he did with the rock. That was coo’

I have a lot of respect for dennis. He is completely wrong on everything that he says, but I have respect for him because he isn’t waivering or playing the political game at all.
