Non-Denominational
Something that kind of confuses me and a little bit drives me crazy is when I see signs on a church that say “Non-Denominational!!” and then “We love Jesus!” next to it.
Correct me if I’m wrong, doesn’t Non-Denominational mean NO Denomination? And, uh, isn’t Christianity a Denomination? I’m quite sure it is.
So, the concept of a Non-Denominational Christian church seems a bit contradictory to me. You?
Just a passing thought. Welcome to the inner ramblings of my mind.

Christianity is a RELIGION, whereas, Baptist/Lutheran/Protestant/etc. are denominations. So, one can be Christian without being Baptist, but one cannot be Baptist without being a Christian.
In the same way,Orthodox, or Reform are denominations/movements of the Jewish religion.

I know it can be confusing. I always think of Christian not as a denomination but as a religion.
We used to go to a Southern Baptist Church which would be the denomination. Now we do not go to a Baptist church. Actually I don’t even know what denomination our church is and I love it!

Get this. Our church is a non denominational denomination! We go to this freaky church that used to meet in a nightclub called Regeneration and we are part of Calvary Chapel. It is cool though.

I think MissT has it nailed down and I would add that the major common thread to Christian religions is Christ as the central figure. The denominations within Christianity arise from differences in religious practice, and/or nuances in certain beliefs regarding the trinity, the afterlife, etc…
For example, most Catholics are baptized within months of birth, while Baptists typically practice an “adult” baptism.
Wikipedia has an excellent article about it if you are interested:
